Artist Statement

The work I create is a reflection of the emotions and experiences I have personally faced. It is an examination of the world around me and how I have interacted with it. It serves as a way of self actualization and connecting with viewers. It is a continuous body of work that is visually two dimensional that encapsulates my own emotions while inviting viewers to look within themselves to question their own emotions and experiences. My work moves between realism and abstraction, informed by my childhood & adulthood. It touches on dual themes of trauma and love, sadness and happiness. I depict both interiors and exteriors and the human form in different scenarios and atmospheres. To portray this, I incorporate different mediums and materials. I create paintings and drawings while the materials I use are oil paint, charcoal, and graphite. I work off of observation, but accentuate lighting, value, and color to push and pull varying emotions. Both interiors and exteriors convey everchanging emotions and the human form conveys brutal reflections of the self. Within outside and inside scenes, I encapsulate emotions of serenity, quietness, loneliness and eeriness. Similar emotions are depicted within the human form, but through themes of: love, depression, consumerism, and abuse. In my application of material I use alla prima in my paintings incorporating impasto textures, and in drawings I use charcoal or graphite to make unique expressive textures to add dimensionality. In my work, there is an equilibrium between the use of subjects and the different mediums and materials I use. This variety showcases different emotions to audiences in a visual way. When viewers see my art, they have the opportunity to reflect upon themselves. By doing this they can make connections within themselves, with others, and the opportunity to think critically about the world around them.
